2025 SKATE AMERICA: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

The penultimate stop of this season’s ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating is Skate America which this year is held in Lake Placid.

When is it on?

Skate America begins Friday, 14 November with the pairs short programme and concludes Sunday, 16 November with the women’s free skating.

Who is skating?

Daniel Grassl (ITA) heads a trio of Italian skaters travelling to Lake Placid. The 2022 European silver medallist is coming off the back of a second place at Cup of China. Mikhail Shaidorov (KAZ) ended up just behind Grassl in Chongqing and will be aiming for another podium finish. Veteran Jason Brown appears in his first Grand Prix of the season and is the host nation’s best bet for a medal in the men’s event. Kazuki Tomono (JPN) missed out on a medal at Skate Canada where 2025 European silver medallist Nikolaj Memola (ITA) wound up sixth.

At Cup of China, Alysa Liu (USA) bagged her first ever Grand Prix medal when she finished second. The World champion goes into Skate America as favourite to take home a first Grand Prix title. The American will once more face Rinka Watanabe (JPN) who took bronze and 2023 European champion Anastasiia Gubanova (GEO) who was fourth in China. 2024 World bronze medallist will seek to redeem herself after a disappointing sixth place at Grand Prix de France.

Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara (JPN) dominated the pairs event at Grand Prix de France and should easily book a berth to next month’s Grand Prix Final. The two-time World champions will face two-time World Junior champions Anastasiia Metelkina and Luka Berulava (GEO). The Georgians won Cup of China and have gone toe to toe with the Japanese already this season at the Kinoshita Group Cup in September where they took second place. Emily Chan and Spencer Howe (USA) were only recently added to the roster and have an opportunity to claim a medal in Lake Placid.

Madison Chock and Evan Bates (USA) opened their season at Cup of China and came away with a victory even if their scores were slightly muted. Evgeniia Lopareva and Geoffrey Brissaud (FRA) were third in Chongqing and look set to battle with Skate Canada bronze medallists Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Lagha (CAN) at Skate America for the silver medal and a potential place at the Grand Prix Final. Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko were edged out of the podium in Saskatoon, but could play spoiler this weekend with some home support.
